Ø      Is the Holy Spirit Divine?

o       Yes, the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity.

§         Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

§         Mark 1:8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

§         Mark 3:28-29 I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. 29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

§         Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."

§         Acts 5:3-4 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? 4Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."

§         2 Corinthains 13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Ø      What is the Role of the Holy Spirit? (not exhaustive)

o       Draws us to Christ

§         Acts 7:51 "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!

§         1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

§         Hebrews 3:7-8  So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice,  8do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert

o       Counselor

§         John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

§         John 15:26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

§         John 16:7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

o       Teacher

§         Isaiah 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD –

§         Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.

§         1 Corinthians 2:10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God

§         1 Corinthians 2:13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words

§         2 Peter 2:21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

o       Tells us What to Say

§         Luke 12:11-12 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."

§         Hebrews 9:14 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

Ø      Names, Titles and Descriptions

o       The Holy Spirit is called many things (i.e. the Spirit of ….) I am going to look at just two of them. The two that I chose are generalities,  there are many names that can fall under these categories.

§         Spirit of Wisdom- I think that this refers to the teaching nature of the Holy Spirit.

·        Isaiah 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD –

·        Isaiah 28:6 He will be a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.

·        Ephesians 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

·        John 15:26 When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

§         Spirit of God- I think this name makes it clear that the Holy Spirit is God, and part of the Trinity. . 

·        Genesis 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

·        Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

·        Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,       because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,  to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

·        Matthew 10:20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

·        Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ

·        1 Corinthians 2:11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
