(NLT)
Ø
Who is Jesus, in His Humanity?
o
It is important to understand that Jesus is God in Human Flesh. He felt human emotions, pain, and hunger.
He was crucified, he died and he was buried. (we will look closer at this later) Jesus, in his human nature can be described
as God Incarnate.

had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34"Where
have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied. 35Jesus
wept. 36Then the Jews said, "See how he
loved him!"

In Who is God, I found that God is Creator, Judge and
Eternal. Jesus it too.
o
Creator
§
John 1:1-3 In

was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made.
§
Colossians 1:15-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all
creation. 16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,

is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

§
1 John 1:1-2
1The one who existed from the beginning is
the one we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is Jesus Christ, the Word
of life. 2This one who is life from God was shown to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and
announce to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was shown to us.
·
We also see that God is Merciful, Loving and Holy. Jesus is too.
o
Merciful
§
Mathew 20:30-34 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by,
they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!" 31The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on
us!" 32Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. 33"Lord,"
they answered, "we want our sight." 34Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately
they received their sight and followed him.
§
Mark 6:34 When
Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began
teaching them many things.

§
2 Corinthians 5:21 God made
him who had no sin to be sin
for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Ø
How do we know He is the Messiah?
o In
short, because he fulfills the prophecies! I won’t cover all of them, but
we will look at a few of them. (Two of the biggest prophetic passage about the
Messiah are in Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53. I will be looking at these passages close
in my study on Prophecy.)
§
Messiah to Shed Blood as Sacrifice
·
Exodus 24:8 Moses then took the
blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance
with all these words."
·
Hebrews 9:11-28 When Christ came as high priest of the good
things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say,
not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means
of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal
redemption. 13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes
of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! 15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,
that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them
free from the sins committed under the first covenant. 16In
the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because
a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18This
is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19When Moses had proclaimed
every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches
of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20He said, "This is the blood of
the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep." 21In the same way, he sprinkled with
the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22In fact, the law
requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. 23It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices,
but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not
enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence.
25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters
the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26Then Christ would have
had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do
away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as man is destined to die once, and after
that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people;
and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
§
Death by Crucifixion
·
Deuteronomy 21:22-23 If a man
guilty of a capital offense is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, 23 you must
not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under
God's curse. You must not desecrate the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
·
Matthew 27:35 When they had crucified
him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots
§
Messiah to be God’s Son
·
2 Samuel 7:14 I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I
will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men.
·
1 Chronicles 17:13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my
love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor
·
Hebrews 1:5 For to which of the
angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be
my Son"?
§
Scorned and Mocked
·
Psalm 22:7-8 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking
their heads: 8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD
rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him."
·
Matthew 27:31 After they had mocked
him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
·
Luke 23:35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They
said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One."
§
Messiah to Suffer Thirst
·
Psalm 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the
roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.
·
John 19:28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture
would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."
§
Bones not Broken
·
Psalm 34:20 He protects all his
bones, not one of them will be broken.
·
John 19:32-33, 36 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and
then those of the other. 33But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs. 36These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:
"Not one of his bones will be broken,"
§
Born of a Virgin
·
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be
with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.
·
Mathew 1:18, 24-25 18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary
was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary
home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave
him the name Jesus.
·
Luke 1:26-35 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel
to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged
to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered
what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said
to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You
will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the
throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the
house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end." 34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" 35The
angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to
be born will be called the Son of God.
§
Not Believed upon by People
·
Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our
message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
·
John 12:37-38 Even after Jesus
had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38This
was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been
revealed?"
§
Wounded for our Transgressions
·
Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced
for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds
we are healed.
·
Matthew 27:26 Then he released
Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
·
John 19:34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing
a sudden flow of blood and water.
·
1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our
sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
§
His Soul an Offering for Sin
·
Isaiah 53:10 Yet it was the LORD's
will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring
and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
·
2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become
the righteousness of God.
§
Messiah to Rise Up on the Third Day
·
Hosea 6:2 ‘After two days he will revive us; on the
third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence’

he said. Come and see the place where he lay.’
·
Acts 2:31 ‘Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection
of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grace, nor did his body see decay.’
§
Born at Bethlehem
·

are small among the clans of Judah, our of you will come for me one who will be rules over Israel, whose origins are from
of old, from ancient times.
·

in Judea, during the time of king Herod, magi from the east came to Jerusalem’
·
John 7:42 ‘Does not the Scripture say that the Christ
will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?
Ø
His Death, and Burial- Doesn’t that mean he isn’t God?
o Not
at all! Jesus didn’t just die and was buried. Jesus rose again! He is living in heaven today, waiting to
bring us to himself!
§
His Death- Jesus died as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. The
punishment for sin is death (Romans 3:23).
But God loved us so much, he sent his son to die for us (John 3:16).
·
Romans 8:5-11 But God showed his
great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9And since we have been
made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God's judgment. 10For
since we were restored to friendship with God by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be
delivered from eternal punishment by his life. 11So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship
with God--all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us in making us friends of God. (NLT)
·
2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no
sin to be sin for us, so that
in him we might become the righteousness of God.
·
Hebrews 9:22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
§
His Burial- Jesus was buried in a tomb.
·
Luke 23:50-54 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a
good and upright man, 51who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean
town of Arimathea and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body. 53Then he took it down,
wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54It
was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
·
John 19:41-42 At the place where Jesus was crucified,
there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42Because it
was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
§
His Resurrection- Jesus death could have been the end of it.
But it wasn’t. When the women went to see the grave, the found it empty! Jesus was seen by many people after the rose again. Jesus rose from the grave to fulfill
the prophecies in Hosea 6:2 and Matthew 12:39-40.
·
Matthew 28:5-6 The angel said
to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He
is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
·

Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him
·
Mark 16:13-14 These returned and reported it to the rest;
but they did not believe them either. 14Later Jesus appeared to the
Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen
him after he had risen.
·
John 21:13-14 Jesus came, took
the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14This was now the third time Jesus
appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
·
1 Corinthians 3:5 For what I received I passed on to you as of
first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that
he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Peter and then
to the Twelve.
§
His Ascension- Not only did Jesus rise from the dead- he ascended into heaven!
·
Mark 16:19 After the
Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God
·
Acts 1:9 After he said this, he
was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
·

of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided
purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
Ø
Names, Titles and Descriptions
o Jesus
is called many things in the Scriptures. I am just going to look at two of them.
§
Son of God (This is a claim to Jesus ancestry.)
·
Matthew 8:28-29 When he arrived at the other side in the
region of the Gadarenes two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass
that way. 29"What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted.
"Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
·
Matthew 26:62-64 Then the high priest stood up and said to
Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 63But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the
living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." 64"Yes,
it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right
hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you,
·
Hebrews 4:14 Therefore, since
we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
§
Son of Man (This is a references to the prophecy in Daniel. It
does NOT mean he is son of a man. Rather, this is a direct claim to divinity
and would have been recognized as such by the Jewish community. Jesus many times
referred to himself as the Son of Man.)
·
Daniel 7:13-14 "In my vision at
night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient
of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples,
nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his
kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
·
Matthew 9:6 But so that you may
know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." Then
he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home."
·
Matthew 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

·
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give his life as a ransom for many."
·
John 8:28 So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will
know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
