Why was the Bible Written?
o So
that we can know who God is
§
Psalm 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
§
Jeremiah 10:10a But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God.
o So
we could identify the Messiah
§
John 5:37-39 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.
You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not
believe the one he sent. 39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess
eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me,
o To
teach us
§
Romans 15:4 For
everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
§
1 Corinthians 10:6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting
our hearts on evil things as they did.
o So
we would know how to live
§
2 Timothy 3:13-15 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know
those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are
able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
§
Proverbs 8:33 Listen to my instruction
and be wise; do not ignore it.
Ø
What should we do with the Bible?
o Study
it
§
Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character
than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if
what Paul said was true.
o Memorize
it
§
Psalm 1:1-2 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the
way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his
law he meditates day and night.
§
Psalm 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against
you.
o Meditate
on it
§
Joshua 1:8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful
to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
§
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another
with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
o Obey
it
§
Deuteronomy 4:2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from
it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you.
§
Matthew 7:24-25 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts
them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams
rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
§
Luke 11:28 He replied, "Blessed rather are those who
hear the word of God and obey it."
o Use
it
§
2 Timothy 2:1515Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman
who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
·
To test what others are saying and teaching
o
Hebrews 4:12 For
the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword,
it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
o Acts
17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians,
for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
·
To reach others
o Romans
10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,
and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
o 1
Peter 4:10-11 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its
various forms. 11If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone
serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To
him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
·
As a defense against Satan and sin
o
Ephesians 6:17 Take
the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word
of God.
